Program Description:
The course theme is to study in situ Europe’s twin crises: the economic and the refugee crises. To gain a better understanding of the complexities of current conditions in European countries and the particular political, economic, and social challenges they pose, students will attend briefings and lectures by policy makers and economic and NGO leaders on topics related to the causes, processes, and consequences that have led to Britain’s exit from the European Union [EU] (Brexit) and may contribute to Greece’s exit from the EU (Grexit). In addition, students will be exposed to the effects of the current refugee crisis (Migrexit) and the complexities and politics involved in addressing it. Throughout the course, material will be presented comparatively by making references to similar issues in the United States with an eye toward enhancing student comprehension of what democracy entails in Europe and the United States.
