So You Want to Study Abroad?
We’re so glad you do!
Did you know that 60% of Rhodes students study abroad during their undergraduate experience at Rhodes College? Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity to grow academically, personally, and culturally—and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
This quick-start guide outlines the major steps in the Rhodes study abroad process. Please note that the details may vary depending on your program. Be sure to check back soon for Study Abroad 101 videos and other helpful resources.
Quick-Start Guide to Studying Abroad
1. Attend a 101 Session
Start your journey by attending a Study Abroad 101 session to learn the basics of Rhodes policies and opportunities.
📍 Location: Burrow Hall, Lower Level, Room 105
🕒 Time: Wednesdays at 3:00 PM (weekly)
2. Meet with Your Advisor
Talk with your academic advisor about your interest in studying abroad and how it fits into your academic plan. After attending a 101 session, schedule a one-on-one meeting with a study abroad advisor.
3. Apply
You’ll need to complete both the Rhodes application and the application for your selected program.
4. Track Deadlines
Stay on top of important deadlines! Be sure to complete and submit any required forms—such as faculty recommendations—on time.
5. Await Acceptance
While waiting to hear back from your program:

Begin preparing for the course approval process

Research your destination

Attend a Financing Abroad Session (details in the Events tab)
6. You’re Accepted!
Once accepted, continue to monitor your Rhodes portal and email for updates. You’ll need to:

Submit course approvals

Apply for a visa (if required)

Secure health insurance

Attend a Know Before You Go Session (listed in the Events tab)
7. Pack & Prepare
Pack appropriately for your destination’s climate, culture, and personal needs. Attend any online orientation sessions your program provides.
8. Arrive at Your Destination
Once abroad, you will:

Register and attend your courses

Submit Enrollment Verification Forms

Turn in any new course approval forms for courses not previously approved
